Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya – BarcelonaTech

The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya – BarcelonaTech (UPC) is a Spanish public institution
dedicated to higher education and research, specialized in the fields of engineering, architecture and science. It is a university committed to excellence, a
driver of economic and social change, and an institution well connected to industry. Its schools and facilities in Barcelona and other locations in Catalonia,
engage in intense research activity and provide students with outstanding education. Technology and knowledge are transferred to industry and society with
recognized achievements. UPC offers 68 official bachelor degrees, 65 master degrees and 51 doctoral degrees, and has a total community of 37,789 members and 197
research groups. UPC participated in 153 projects in FP7, 38 of which it coordinated.

The research groups involved in GRACeFUL are the Institut de Robòtica i Informàtica Industrial
(IRI) and the Sustainability Measurement and Modelling Lab (SUMM Lab).

IRI is a joint institute of the UPC and the Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC). Its group on
Automatic Control develops basic and applied research with special emphasis on modelling, supervision and control of nonlinear, complex and/or
large-scale systems. The group has acquired specific expertise in the application of advanced control techniques to environmental systems operation and
resources management, specifically in the water and energy fields. The research is oriented towards improving the efficiency in power generation systems, water
supply, distribution networks and power supply grids, among others. One of the main research topics is the application of Constraint Programming to intelligent
utility network control and operation scheduling. The group performed pioneering work on the latter topic and has gained ample expertise in constraint modelling
of decision support for the management and control of physical systems.

SUMM Lab is a multidisciplinary research group involved in measuring and modelling the many facets of the sustainability science. SUMM Lab
was stablished in 2011 and its main activities are directed towards a vision of a world in which social and ecological systems are understood and managed to
improve human welfare and favor the sustainable co-evolution of civilization and the biosphere. Its mission is to advance in the comprehension of the complexity
of interactions of ecological and social systems; to generate knowledge for developing and applying integrative techniques to sustainably manage, govern and
understand our world by means of inter- and trans- disciplinary research and technology transfer; and to promote integrative scientific communication and
multidisciplinary encounters to develop the sustainability paradigm and science.
