The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung e.V.(Fraunhofer Society for the Advancement of Applied Research) is Germany’s leading organization of research institutions for applied research. Fraunhofer’s 60 research institutes are co-ordinating and/or contributing to large national and international industrial applied research projects, as well as to research projects targeting the service sector, national and regional governments and the EU. A staff of 17 000, the majority of whom are scientists and engineers (with university degree), generate the annual research budget of more than €1.4 billion.
The Knowledge Discovery Department (KD) at the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems (IAIS) in Sankt Augustin, Germany, is a research group (50 scientists) located in the field Machine Learning and Data Mining. Professional experience and expertise in this group include Data Mining and machine Learning, Visual Analytics, Distributed Computing, and Big Data architectures. The group has extensive experiences with EU projects, having coordinated in the last 6 years five ICT projects and participated in more than 18. To mention a few, Fraunhofer IAIS coordinates the FERARI project (Flexible Event pRocessing for big dAta aRchItecures, 2014-2016), the LIFT project (local inference in massively distributed systems, 2010-2013), the KDubiq Coordination Action (Knowledge Discovery in Ubiquitous Environments, 2006-2008), and is involved in the DataSim project (Data Science for Simulating the Era of Electric Vehicles, 2011 – 2014), as well as having been involved in the MODAP Coordination Action (Mobility, Data Mining and privacy, 2009-2012), the VisMaster Coordination Action on Visual Analytics (2008-2010), the LifeWatch project (development of an European infrastructure for coping with the biological diversity, 2007 – 2009) and the IP SIMDAT (Grids for Industrial Product Development, 2004-2008). The group is also currently involved in several nationally funded and industrial projects in Big Data Analytics, Spatial Data Mining, Visual Analytics, Multimedia Mining, and Text Mining.
Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technologies (IDMT), located in Ilmenau, Thuringia, evolved from a subsidiary of Fraunhofer IIS (“Home of MP3”) to an independent institute in 2004. About 80 full-time employees along with same number of students are working in various research fields, including e.g. acoustics, bio-inspired computing, integrated learning and knowledge representation environments, data representation and UI design, A/V signal analysis and search, interactive media applications, as well as content aggregation and distribution. The research group “User-Centered Design and Technologies (UDT) has developed strategic R&D competence on user-friendly networked environments including learning and training to allow managing individual concepts, and structuring digital content. That includes aspects of usefulness and usability, game-based as well as gamification approaches and methods alike. UDT moreover develops advanced technologies and procedures to evaluate new developments in web agents, machine learning, multimodal dialog mechanisms, and user interfaces. UDT mainly contributes to the development of information pools and systems, to the tailoring of such information, and to addressing ethical, social, and societal aspects including the application of social media. UDT represents an interdisciplinary team of informaticians, engineers, pedagogic and didactic experts, social scientists, and more. The most relevant EU project for GRACeFUL is the PREFORMA project (PREservation FORMAts for culture information/e-archives), and EU FP7-ICT project running from 2014 to 2017. From a national viewpoint, the PANDA project (Development of a Software Solution for Personalisation of Processes n Learning and Training through Adaptivity, User Modelling, and Data Analysis of Learners’ Activities), funded by the German Ministry for Economy and Energy (BMWi)-in the AIF-ZIM program between 2013 and 2015, will contribute most.
